Spoiler-Free Review: The Rest Of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness What if you aren’t the Chosen One? The one who’s supposed to fight the zombies, or the soul-eating ghosts, or whatever the heck this new thing is, with the blue lights and the death? What if you’re like Mikey? Who just wants to graduate and go to prom and maybe finally work up the courage to ask Henna out before someone goes and blows up the high school. Again. Because sometimes there are problems bigger than this week’s end of the world, and sometimes you just have to find the extraordinary in your ordinary life. Even if your best friend is worshipped by mountain lions. Award-winning writer Patrick Ness’s bold and irreverent novel powerfully reminds us that there are many different types of remarkable. This book is a dig at all of the "chosen ones" stories and I really enjoyed this idea. This was also what drew me to this book and also because I wanted to have another go at reading Patrick Ness. About 2 years ago I tried reading The Knife Of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness and found it super hard to get into. I ended up DNF-ing the book because I just couldn't get into it and I think that may have been because I was too young and didn't understand the humour. So as you can probably guess, I was rather apprehensive about reading this book, but I am SO glad that I did as it is one of my favourite books of all time!
Anyway, let's get into the review! This book is not about the chosen ones. It's about the kids in the background, the ones no one ever sees or if they do, they disregard them because their not the feature of the movie/book. Well this time they are the feature. These people attend the same school as the "indie kids" or the "chosen ones", but have no part in their lives. They're just in the background while the "indie kids" live their adventurous (and also dangerous) lives. The adventures of the "indie kids" starts off each chapter and then the main focus is what is happening to the background kids. The background kids are drawn into the spotlight as it focuses on their problems. These include normal everyday problems that people may experience like, anxiety/panic attacks, OCD, anorexia (other eating disorders), car crashes etc. This book also blends fantasy with contemporary to create a brilliant storyline. There's things like arguments and bombs, strange blue lights, zombie deer and proms and more. It's definitely a successful cross-over and one that I absolutely loved! Also, one of the kids is a cat-goddess thing as well, so there's that as well. These things together create the most awesome story ever and leaves no dull moments. This book is full of what I heard is typical Ness humour and I loved every bit of it. The humour definitely helped keep the story going and moving on. It also created a lot of problems and arguments between the characters, keeping the story eventful. There is only one thing I want to be changed about the book and that's the length. I NEED MORE OF THIS STORY!! At least I need an epilogue or something! Apart from this, the storyline, characters and writing was spectacular. I loved the writing so much that I've written a separate post full of some of my favourite quotes, because I just couldn't. Rate - 5/5!! I definitely recommend this as I personally loved it! I have heard some bad reviews, but I disagree with a lot of their reasons, but everyone has different tastes and opinions. Oh well! Juts please at least check it out as I am now obsessed with it! *crazy laugh* BYE! Cover Reveal: Conspiracy Boy (Angel Academy #2) by Cecily White Prophecy Girl (Angel Academy #1) by Cecily White Amelie Bennett: Ending the world, one prophecy at a time. I was born to slay Crossworld demons. Big black flappy ones, little green squirmy ones. Unfortunately, the only thing getting slain these days is my social life. With my high school under attack, combat classes intensifying, and Academy instructors dropping right and left, I can barely get my homework done, let alone score a bondmate before prom. Then he shows up. Jackson Smith-Hailey. Unspeakably hot, hopelessly unattainable, and dangerous in all the right ways. Sure, he’s my trainer. And okay, maybe he hates me. Doesn’t mean I’ll ignore the wicked Guardian chemistry between us. It’s crazy! Every time I’m with him, my powers explode. Awesome, right? Wrong. Now my teachers think I’m the murderous Graymason destined to bring down our whole race of angelbloods. Everyone in New Orleans is hunting me. The people I trusted want me dead. Jack and I have five days to solve the murders, prevent a vampire uprising, and thwart the pesky prophecy foretelling his death by my hand. Shouldn’t be too difficult. Getting it done without falling in love? That might take a miracle. Conspiracy Boy (Angel Academy #2) by Cecily White Wraithmaker Amalie is torn between protecting the vampire who saved her life and navigating rebellion, assassination, and political upheaval to save Guardian Jack, the man she loves.
As long as Amelie is Luc's Immortal fledgling, she and Jack will never be free to love each other. And if the Guardian Elders discover their forbidden bond, Amelie and Jack might be separated again. Unfortunately, the Guardian war on demonkind, and rebellions threatening both the Peace Tenets and Luc's aristocratic family drive Jack and Amelie farther apart. Amelie struggles to learn how to use her newfound powers as a Wraithmaker. She feels they're the key to discern who her allies are, help Luc survive the Trial to become Sovereign, and prevent the war threatening to destroy her world. She also hopes her powers will help her figure out exactly which side her bondmate, Jack, is on. But she's missing a clue and seeks out Lisa, the sister who tried to kill her, for answers. Instead, Amelie learns her only chance of survival is to leave Luc and Jack behind, escape and defect. February TBR! (The Definite Part!) I know that I said in a post a couple of days a go (A Note About Wrap-Ups and TBRs) that I was going to stop doing TBRs. Well, this month I do actually have some books that I know that I will be reading and some that I do definitely want to read, but it all depends how much time I have for reading this month. Also, I do have a few books already that I'm expecting in the post for reviews, so it looks like a lot of my month will be spent reading and reviewing those, but if I do have time here are the books that I want to read/finish off. In December/January, I did start quite a few books (3, I think) that I never finished and this month I want to catch up and finish those off, so I can mark them off my TBR pile. I'm going to start with those: The Sin Eater's Daughter by Melinda Salisbury I started this last month as a re-read so I could remember some of the things that happened in preparation for The Sleeping Prince launch this month. In January I got 132 Pages in before the end of the month, so one of my aims this month is to finish the last 200 or so pages and then get my hands on The Sleeping Prince and read that. As I'm writing this now (Feb 7th) I've already finished The Sin Eater's Daughter, but still haven't purchased The Sleeping Prince, but next week I'm off school and my mum is going to take me shopping and I'll buy it then. M is for Magic by Neil Gaiman I also started this last month because I needed something short to read while I was waiting for a book to come that I wanted to read. Anyway, I read the first short story and haven't continued since. I've got about 220 pages left and I'm hoping I can read them all this month. The Last of the Spirits by Chris Priestley I started this back in December as it's a Christmas Carol retelling and I wanted to read it in the festive season. I ran out of time as I had so many wintery/festive books to read and unfortunately this was at the bottom of the list. I got around 7 pages in then I put it down as I also didn't feel in the mood for it. I've got just under 200 pages left and just like the previous two, I would really love to get to this this month. I've got three whole books that I NEED to read this month (at least as I also have 3 picture books coming in the post for review). Luckily, one of these is a buddy read so I should be able to get through it reasonably quickly. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter #2) This is the buddy read which I mentioned above. I think I've said this in quite a few blog posts now, but if you don't know I'm currently reading Harry Potter for the first time and I'm buddy reading them with the amazing Dahabo (from @admirerofbooks on Instagram.) If you're not already, then you should definitely follow her as her account is just amazing and she's so kind! Anyway, we're reading a book a month for seven months and as it's February, we are reading the second book. I loved the first one and can't wait to continue as I've heard that the books just get better and better the further into the series you get. The Lost Hero of Cape Cod by Vincent Miles I was sent this for review from the author (thank you!) and I'm actually currently reading it. It's a historical biography account of one of the 'pirates' who was important in the Maritime trade of America, Captain Asa Eldridge. When I got the email about the book, it did sound really different to the normal stuff I read, but it also sounded really intriguing. I went into this book really excited, but I'm struggling a bit with it. For what it is, it's a good, amazing actually account of that time period and also the background history to Captain Asa Eldridge's family and other families at the time. It's just me, I just think maybe it's not for me and I'm also struggling a bit with the language, I don't understand some of the parts and also there are moments which I think could be helped with shortening. Anyway, I'm hoping it'll pick up soon and you'll hear more of my thoughts in my review and also my February Wrap-Up. Dark Escape by Eileen Sheehan I was sent a finished ebook copy of this for review from the very kind author, Eileen Sheehan (Thanks Eileen!). If you're not aware, I recently read and reviewed Eileen's The Vampire, The Handler and Me and I also did an interview with her. If you would like to check those out then I'll link them at the end. Anyway, I believe this is a fantasy/romance novel and I'm really excited for it. I'm hoping that I'll be able to read it this month, but I don't know if I'll have time. If I don't end up reading it this month, it will be one of the first books I read in March. When I've read it I will be posting a full review for it so keep your eyes peeled for that. There are also two releases this month that I'm hoping to both buy and read this month. However, if I run out of time this month to read them, I'll just carry them onto my March TBR and then I'll definitely read them. The Sleeping Prince by Melinda Salisbury (The Sin Eater's Daughter #2) This is already out, but I just haven't had time to go book shopping, but next week I have a week off of school and me and my mum are going to go to basically my favourite bookshop and I'll get it there. Head Over Heels (Geek Girl #5) by Holly Smale This isn't out till the end of the month and that's partly why I'm not sure whether I'll be able to read it this month or not, but this is one of my most anticipated releases of the year and therefore I'll be reading it ASAP, whether that be this month or next month. Anyway, that's what I'm hoping/want to read this month. I'm definitely not going to be able to read all of the books above, but I would love to read as many of them as possible.

This month is a great month for new releases and there is some that I'm really excited for! I just want to note that this is only the releases that I'm excited for, I know that for example Glass Sword (Red Queen #2) by Victoria Aveyard is coming out this month, but I haven't read Red Queen therefore it wont be included as I'm not excited for it. I hope you guys understand what I mean, anyway this is just the releases that I'M excited for. Let's get into it! Yellow by Megan Jacobson - February 1st I recently saw this in Cat's (Little Book Owl) book haul video, so I decided to check it out on Goodreads. It's supposed to be a Thriller but for YA readers. Though this isn't the sort of thing I'd read at all, it did sound really intriguing to me and a lot of you might know this, but in 2016 I'm trying to vary the sorts of books I readand try out new genres that I wouldn't normally read. This ticks that box and that's why I'm including it in here. I'm hoping to pick this up and give it a go soon and hopefully I'll end up loving it. Synopsis - Yellow is a YA murder mystery with a slight supernatural edge, but at heart it's about the redemptive power of kindness. Publishing in February 2016, it’s a beautifully written coming-of-age story about family, first love, finding your place and uncovering the secrets of the past. If fourteen-year-old Kirra is having a mid-life crisis now, then it doesn't bode well for her life expectancy. Her so-called friends bully her, whatever semblance of a mother she had has been drowned at the bottom of a gin bottle ever since her dad left them for another woman, and now a teenage ghost is speaking to her through a broken phone booth. Kirra and the ghost make a pact. She'll prove who murdered him almost twenty years ago if he does three things for her. He makes her popular, he gets her parents back together, and he doesn't haunt her. Things aren't so simple however, and Kirra realises that people can be haunted in more ways than one. Starflight (Starflight #1) by Melissa Landers - February 2nd I'm not the biggest Sci-fi fan. In fact I've only read one sci-fi book before and that was The Martian by Andy Weir. However, I do want to change that and I've always wanted to try out Melissa Lander's Alienated series (I think it's a duology). I've only heard great things about her books. I then heard that she was starting a new series and was instantly drawn into all of the hype. I don't think I'm going to purchase this straight away as this year I'm trying to buy only a couple of books each month depending on the number of my TBR pile. However, when I do get round to it, I still think I'll try out Alienated first and if I like that then I'll try this series and maybe by then the second book will be out. I still thought I'd mention it though as it does sound really intriguing. Synopsis - Life in the outer realm is a lawless, dirty, hard existence, and Solara Brooks is hungry for it. Just out of the orphanage, she needs a fresh start in a place where nobody cares about the engine grease beneath her fingernails or the felony tattoos across her knuckles. She's so desperate to reach the realm that she's willing to indenture herself to Doran Spaulding, the rich and popular quarterback who made her life miserable all through high school, in exchange for passage aboard the spaceliner Zenith. When a twist of fate lands them instead on the Banshee, a vessel of dubious repute, Doran learns he's been framed on Earth for conspiracy. As he pursues a set of mysterious coordinates rumored to hold the key to clearing his name, he and Solara must get past their enmity to work together and evade those out for their arrest. Life on the Banshee may be tumultuous, but as Solara and Doran are forced to question everything they once believed about their world—and each other—the ship becomes home, and the eccentric crew family. But what Solara and Doran discover on the mysterious Planet X has the power to not only alter their lives, but the existence of everyone in the universe... The Sleeping Prince (#2) by Melinda Salisbury - February 4th Yep, this book is out!! I've been sooo excited for this for months and guess what I still haven't even got a copy yet! That's right, I think I've gone insane. I don't actually know why I haven't bought it yet, but I know that I need to soon and that I will. I even reread The Sin Eater's Daughter again in preparation for it, so I could jump straight into this and I just haven't. I promise I will soon and when I do read this, I will post a review.:) Synopsis - Return to the darkly beautiful world of The Sin Eater's Daughter with a sequel that will leave you awed, terrified . . . and desperate for more. Ever since her brother Lief disappeared, Errin's life has gone from bad to worse. Not only must she care for her sick mother, she has to scrape together rent money by selling illegal herbal cures. But none of that compares to the threat of the vengeful Sleeping Prince whom the Queen just awoke from his enchanted sleep. When her village is evacuated as part of the war against the Sleeping Prince, Errin is left desperate and homeless. The only person she can turn to is the mysterious Silas, a young man who buys deadly poisons from Errin, but won't reveal why he needs them. Silas promises to help her, but when he vanishes, Errin must journey across a kingdom on the brink of war to seek another way to save her mother and herself. But what she finds shatters everything she believed about her world, and with the Sleeping Prince drawing nearer, Errin must make a heartbreaking choice that could affect the whole kingdom. Riders (Riders #1) by Veronica Rossi - February 16th A lot of you will know Veronica Rossi from her Under The Never Sky trilogy, which I myself have never read but have always wanted to. When I heard that she was starting a new series, I instantly got excited as this finally gives me an excuse to read her books. The synopsis to the book (and the cover) were what drew me to the book, the synopsis sounded very interesting, but also something that would be different to the previous books I've read. Also, I really like the cover and you all know I can't resist a good cover. Synopsis - For eighteen-year-old Gideon Blake, nothing but death can keep him from achieving his goal of becoming a U.S. Army Ranger. As it turns out, it does. Recovering from the accident that most definitely killed him, Gideon finds himself with strange new powers and a bizarre cuff he can't remove. His death has brought to life his real destiny. He has become War, one of the legendary four horsemen of the apocalypse. Over the coming weeks, he and the other horsemen--Conquest, Famine, and Death--are brought together by a beautiful but frustratingly secretive girl to help save humanity from an ancient evil on the emergence. They fail. Now--bound, bloodied, and drugged--Gideon is interrogated by the authorities about his role in a battle that has become an international incident. If he stands any chance of saving his friends and the girl he's fallen for--not to mention all of humankind--he needs to convince the skeptical government officials the world is in imminent danger. But will anyone believe him? The Last Boy at St. Edith's by Lee Gjertsen Malone - February 23rd I'm not going to lie and say that I'd heard about this book because in actual fact I hadn't heard anything about it. I only came across it when I was looking through the releases for this month on Goodreads. The cover looked interesting so I clicked it because you all know that I can't resist a good cover. Anyway, I was reading through the synopsis and it just sounded fun, but also like it would be a good read. In the end I decided I would include it in here as I haven't read anything about it and it might encourage some of you guys to pick it up at some point like I will be. Also, from the people who received an ARC of it, a lot of people have rated it a 5/5, which just makes me even more excited. Synopsis - Seventh grader Jeremy Miner has a girl problem. Or, more accurately, a girls problem. Four hundred and seventy-five of them. That's how many girls attend his school, St. Edith's Academy. Jeremy is the only boy left after the school's brief experiment in coeducation. And he needs to get out. His mom won't let him transfer, so Jeremy takes matters into his own hands: He's going to get expelled. Together with his best friend, Claudia, Jeremy unleashes a series of hilarious pranks in hopes that he'll get kicked out with minimum damage to his permanent record. But when his stunts start to backfire, Jeremy has to decide whom he's willing to knock down on his way out the door. Written with equal parts humor and heart, Lee Gjertsen Malone's debut is all about fitting in, standing out, and finding the place where you belong. Head Over Heels (Geek Girl #5) by Holly Smale - February 25th OMG,OMG,OMG! IT'S NEARLY HERE! Right, if you don't know I'm like the biggest Geek Girl fan ever, I'm obsessed with this series. By that I mean I'm completely obsessed, that obsessed that I've been counting down the days to publication for MONTHS. Everyone else is fangirling over the fact that Glass Sword (Red Queen #2) by Victoria Aveyard and The Raven King (The Raven Cycle #5) by Maggie Stiefvater etc are coming out this year and I'm over here hyperventilating that Head Over Heels is coming out this month. I'm not okay. After this there's only one more book till this series ends and that will also be when my life ends. Yes, this series matters to me that much - I don't know how I'm supposed to carry on living with my life without Harriet Manners and her awkwardness helping me! Holly better write some novellas or something to go along with this series or I will not be able to cope. Ugghhh. I'm just going to forget that in like a years time the Geek Girl series will be over and just continue focusing that Head Over Heels is out this month! YAYAYAYAYAY! Synopsis - “My name is Harriet Manners, and I will always be a geek.” The fifth book in the bestselling, award-winning GEEK GIRL series. Harriet Manners knows almost every fact there is. She knows duck-billed platypuses don’t have stomachs. She knows that fourteen squirrels were once detained as spies. She knows only one flag in the world features a building. And for once, Harriet knows exactly how her life should go. She’s got it ALL planned out. So when love is in the air, Harriet is determined to Make Things Happen! If only everyone else would stick to the script… Has GEEK GIRL overstepped the mark, and is following the rules going to break hearts all over again? P.S. I've still not stopped fangirling and I never will... Hahahahah *laughs like a crazy person* BUY THE BOOKS
