Here is what I've been reading this weekend! Shadows by Paula Weston It' been almost a year since Gaby Walters was in the car crash that killed her twin brother, Jude. Her body was healed in the sunshine of the Pandanus Beach, but her grief is raw and constant. It doesn't help that every night in her dreams, she kills demons and other hell-spawns. And then Rafa comes to town. Not only does he look exactly like the guy who's been appearing in Gaby's dreams - he claims a history with her brother that makes no sense. Gaby is forced to accept what she thought about herself and her life is only a shadow of the truth - and that truth is most likely to be found in the shadows of her nightmares. Who is Rafa? And who are the Rephaim? And most importantly, who can she trust? I am currently about 150 pages in and am really enjoying it! At first I found it to be quite boring but now I'm really getting into it and the story is really coming together.
I received a ebook copy to review through NetGalley, and I will be posting my review (hopefully) later this week! What are you currently reading? Let me know down below! Stepping Stones (#1 The Stone Series) by Kacey Vanderkarr ~ 25th September Onnaleigh Moore is part of a plan—and it isn’t hers. When her brother dies in a car accident, Onna is desperate to preserve the tatters of her family. Any hope of finding normalcy vanishes when her mother runs off and her dad turns to booze to numb his pain. Onna’s grief is crippling, but the boy who showed up just when she needed him is helping her cope. Everett’s presence is comforting, though he knows things—Onna’s name just before they met, where she lives, and sometimes he comments on thoughts she doesn’t say aloud. She pegs him for a stalker, or maybe psychic, but the truth is deadlier than she imagines. As their feelings for one another deepen, Everett confesses a horrifying secret: Onna’s brother is only the beginning of the plan, and some fates are worse than death. I have received a review copy of this book through NetGalley so I will have a review coming up very soon! I am the perfect weapon. I kill with a single touch. Twylla is blessed. The Gods have chosen her to marry a prince, and rule the kingdom. But the favour of the Gods has it's price. A deadly poison infuses her skin. Those who anger the queen must die under Twylla's fatal touch. Only Lief, an outspoken new guard, can see past Twylla's chilling role to the girls she truly is. Yet in a court as dangerous and the queen's, some truths should not be told... Characters Twylla - Twylla is a young women who, when she was a child was chosen by the Queen as she was some 'Daunen Embodied' person sent by the Gods. Her job is to kill people. She's the Queen's executioner therefore she has to kill anyone that argues or offends her Majesty. Drinking poison so she can kill the people, Twylla really doesn't have a nice life especially when she has to kill her best friend and the only one that she really truly trusted. I felt sorry for Twylla as all along she was tricked into being someone she's not and believing in things that might not always exist. She was used by the vicious Queen and I just couldn't help feeling sorry for her. At the start of the book, I found her to be quite boring and just generally a spoilt brat but as the story unravelled on, things began to show and my whole opinion on her twisted around. Queen - The Queen, where do I start?! She is pure evil and everything she does is part of a grand scheme inside her deranged head. She made me feel so angry and just frustrated at the way she was just stringing people along, telling them a load of rubbish, but she was a great character to have been created. She was exactly what the book needed, someone who was evil and could easily control people. Overall, a well-created character. Prince - The Prince I also felt sympathetic towards as he just wanted someone he couldn't have and it broke his heart, but in the end he knew that he had to stop chasing after things he just wasn't meant to have. I loved his defiance against his mother, The Queen, and his love for Twylla but sadly that love just didn't go back to him. All he wanted was a Queen, whom he could love and call his own and someone that in the future he would rule the village/town with. He understood and was against his mothers schemes, but he sometimes had to pretend that he wasn't. I quite liked the character of The Prince. King - I don't really have much to say about him as I didn't really care for him as much as I originally thought I would. He was made to be weaker by the Queen and he was always afraid to stand up for himself, apart from one time when he did rebel against the Queen's wishes and he was sadly punished, which if you've read the book then you know how. The King was a good character but as I previously said I didn't really feel anything towards him. Twylla's Mother - To be rightfully honest with you, I didn't like her. I do have my reasons though which I will explain for you in a moment. She was a strong women, which I guess comes with her job of being A Sin Eater. I didn't like the way she treated Twylla when she decided to go with the Queen. The way in which she slammed the door on her daughter and told her she'd made her choices and couldn't come back. Twylla was only little and when the Queen offered a place in the palace how could she not resist, to be a princess and live in the palace with the Queen, King and handsome Prince is every little girls dream. I can understand why the Mum reacted the way she did, her daughter did just tell her she would rather live with the Queen then with her, but I think maybe at least she could've pretended to be happy for her daughter, she was going to live with the Queen! Also, some of the tales Twylla tells about her mother in the story are awful, but not nearly as bad as the Queen. Dorin - Dorin I liked as he was looking out for Twylla's best interests and overall he was just doing his job as her guard. Lief - There is too much to say about Lief! I have to admit he is a bit cocky and he is quite outspoken but that just adds to his character. He isn't afraid to say what he's thinking, which sometimes causes trouble. He loves Twylla and isn't scared about her deadly touch, therefore he scares Twylla by getting so close to her and daring to do thing no one else has done before. He is family orientated and only has his job to help his family, who are struggling. There is so much more I have to say about Lief, but I can't put it all into words. If you want me to try and add more about Lief then I will, just leave a comment below! Plot This book was brilliant! I have to admit there was a part just after the beginning that bored me and I struggled through it, but I think I was slightly in a reading slump, which didn't exactly help. I am so glad I pushed on with this book and that ending was, PHEW! I can't describe it, haha. :) The ending was definitely not what I expected to happen. Everything played out differently than what I was I was expecting, which made me gobble down the pages in a race to find out what would happen. It kept me reading and anticipating the near ending! Rate Because of my struggle with a few chapters, I think I have to lower my overall rating to a 4/5, which I think is still a good rating. I really did enjoy this book and I recommend that you do give this one a try as it definitely gets you interested and wanting to read more! I've now just got to wait for the sequel, I need it now! I NEED IT!! Anyway, Bye! |
