Cover and Prologue Reveal: Strange The Dreamer by Laini Taylor Cover Reveal UK COVER - LEFT US COVER - RIGHT Synopsis - Strange the Dreamer is the story of: the aftermath of a war between gods and men a mysterious city stripped of its name a mythic hero with blood on his hands a young librarian with a singular dream a girl every bit as perilous as she is imperiled alchemy and blood candy, nightmares and godspawn, moths and monsters, friendship and treachery, love and carnage. Welcome to Weep. Prologue Reveal/Excerpt On the second sabbat of Twelfthmoon, in the city of Weep, a girl fell from the sky. Her skin was blue, her blood was red. She broke over an iron gate, crimping it on impact, and there she hung, impossibly arched, graceful as a temple dancer swooning on a lover's arm. One slick finial anchored her in place. Its point, protruding from her sternum, glittered like a brooch. She fluttered briefly as her ghost shook loose, and then her hands relaxed, shedding fistfuls of freshly picked torch ginger buds. Later, they would say these had been hummingbird hearts and not blossoms at all. They would say she hadn't shed blood but wept it. That she was lewd, tonguing her teeth at them, upside down and dying, that she vomited a serpent that turned to smoke when it hit the ground. They would say a flock of moths had come, frantic, and tried to lift her away. That was true. Only that. They hadn't a prayer, though. The moths were no bigger than the mouths of children, and even dozens together could only pluck at the strands of her darkening hair until their wings sagged, sodden with her blood. They were purled away with the blossoms as a grit-choked gust came blasting down the street. The earth heaved underfoot. The sky spun on its axis. A queer brilliance lanced through billowing smoke, and the people of Weep had to squint against it. Blowing grit and hot light and the stink of saltpeter. There had been an explosion. They might have died, all and easily, but only this girl had, shaken from the pocket of the sky. Her feet were bare, her mouth stained damson. Her pockets were all full of plums. She was young and lovely and surprised and dead. She was also blue. Blue as opals, pale blue. Blue as cornflowers, or dragonfly wings, or a spring - not summer- sky. Someone screamed. The scream drew others. The others screamed, too, not because a girl was dead, but because the girl was blue, and this meant something in the city of Weep. Even after the sky stopped reeling, and the earth settled, and the last fume spluttered from the blast site and dispersed, the screams went on, feeding themselves from voice to voice, a virus of the air. The blue girl's ghost gathered itself and perched, bereft, upon the spearpoint-tip of the projecting finial, just an inch above her own still chest. Gasping in shock, she tilted back her invisible head and gazed, mournfully, up. The screams went on and on. And across the city, atop a monolithic wedge of seamless, mirror-smooth metal, a statue stirred, as though awakened by the tumult, and slowly lifted its great horned head. Release Day Blitz: Summerlost by Ally Condie It's the first real summer since the devastating accident that killed Cedar's father and younger brother, Ben. But now Cedar and what’s left of her family are returning to the town of Iron Creek for the summer. They’re just settling into their new house when a boy named Leo, dressed in costume, rides by on his bike. Intrigued, Cedar follows him to the renowned Summerlost theatre festival. Soon, she not only has a new friend in Leo and a job working concessions at the festival, she finds herself surrounded by mystery. The mystery of the tragic, too-short life of the Hollywood actress who haunts the halls of Summerlost. And the mystery of the strange gifts that keep appearing for Cedar. Infused with emotion and rich with understanding, Summerlost is the touching middle grade debut from Ally Condie, the international bestselling author of the Matched series, that highlights the strength of family and personal resilience in the face of tragedy. Letter from Ally:
Dear Readers, I think most of us have had our hearts broken. Sometimes we can see it coming, and sometimes it comes down with the unexpected force of a sudden gale of a wind or a rising of waters that we thought were still and safe. Loss is universal to human experience, but the way we each feel and recover is one of the most personal things to do. In Summerlost, Cedar is dealing with the loss of her father and younger brother. And my intent was to show how hard their deaths are for her. But this is also a book about the healing power of friendship. Most of us have been broken-hearted; I hope that most of us have also discovered the miracle of friendships that were just what we needed. Cedar and Leo's friendship is based on someone I met when I was twelve. Like Leo, my friend was fun and liked to enlist me in crazy adventures (although we never gave a secret guided tour of our town the way they do in Summerlost). And, like Leo, he thought I was wonderful and of worth at a time when I needed it most. SUMMERLOST is my attempt to pay tribute both to the pain we feel and the friendships that save us. Thank you so much for supporting this book, and for your willingness to give Cedar's story a try. I hope it makes you think of a wonderful friend of your own, whether that is someone you met in the pages of a favourite book or outside, in the world where it is often hard and beautiful to live. Best wishes and happy reading always, Ally Condie Praise: A Spring 2016 Kids' Indie Next List Top 10 Pick! Named one of Publishers Weekly’s Most Anticipated Children’s and YA Books of Spring 2016 ● “Condie (Matched) strikes a deep emotional chord with this coming-of-age story.” – Publishers Weekly, starred review ● “Multiple, seemingly random details, including a family of turkey vultures that now roost outside Cedar’s window, an absurd soap opera narrative of a woman buried alive, and Leo’s quest for a trip with his father, coalesce into metaphors that help Cedar make sense of her grief and the life she now has to look forward to. Thoughtful, poetic chapter endings guide readers new to psychological depth toward meaningful connections between plot events and thematic reflections.” – BCCB “A moving tale of friendship and loss. I loved these characters—I wish we could have been friends when I was a kid.” –Brandon Mull, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Fablehavenand Five Kingdoms series “Ally Condie’s first middle grade book might also be my favorite out of ALL her books to date. This months book haul is quite larger than my previous ones therefore to save time I'm going to change the way I format my book hauls. When I do my bookhauls I always insert the picture of a book in and then talk a bit about what I THINK it's about and I normally just write a load of rubbish. So what I'm going to do instead is copy in the synopsis' in for each book so you can actually KNOW what each book is about. Therefore, I won't really be talking much about each one as it's not necessary. I will still be talking a bit here and there but it will be quite different. I'm sort of just doing this as a tester, so if you guys don't like it then comment on this blog post and I can always change it back to my normal setup, if I get no comments I will just carry on doing this method so please let me know below. Anyway, this month I have a total of 15 (I think?) book to haul so let's get into it! Library Books This month I decided to go to the library and order a book in and then when I went to return it I may have took another two books out. (Oops!) Though I didn't pay for these I thought I may as well throw them in here as well so here they are. Naomi&Ely's No Kiss List by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan Naomi and Ely are best friends. Naomi loves and is in love with Ely, and Ely loves Naomi, but prefers to be in love with boys. So they create their "No Kiss List" of people neither of them is allowed to kiss. And this works fine…until Bruce. Bruce is Naomi's boyfriend, so there's no reason to put him on the List. But when Ely kisses Bruce, the result is a rift of universal proportions. Can these best friends come back together again? Or will this be the end of Naomi and Ely: the institution? Told in alternating voices using an array of emoticons and symbols by co-authors Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, co-author of WILL GRAYSON, WILL GRAYSON with John Green (THE FAULT IN OUR STARS), NAOMI AND ELY’S NO KISS LIST is the ultimate offbeat love—and in love—story. I have actually finished reading this and overall it was okay. I do talk about it more in my February Wrap-Up which I'll link below. Also, if you want a review then comment down below and I'll do one. Be prepared that it will be quite ranty. (Zoom Boom #2)/Be Careful (Zoom Boom#3) by Joel Brown Be Tidy or Not? (Zoom Boom #2) by Joel Brown Title - Be Tidy or Not? (Zoom Boom #2) Author - Joel Brown Pages - 28 Pages Synopsis - Charm and Dirty Bird are two characters from the Zoom Boom book series. Their names are quite the opposite of their character. Charm is very messy; whereas, Dirty Bird is very tidy. However, although they are different, they are still good friends. Be Tidy, or Not?, is a book that allows the readers to understand and appreciate the differences in their friends. It teaches children not to judge the differences, but to accept people as they are, allowing them to be tidy, or not. Going into this book I was expecting it to be about how to tidy your room (instructions etc) but I was pleasantly surprised it was about how different people can be friends despite these differences. It told you the importance of friends and also expressed that people are different, be who you are even if it's different to your friends. This pleasantly surprised me and I loved the book even more for that. It features two different characters, Charm and Dirty Bird. You may be able to gather from the title and the names of the characters which character is tidy and which one isn't. However, it turns out that Charm is a very messy bird and Dirty Bird is very clean and well-organised. This brought back the all important phrase, 'don't judge a book by it's cover'. I think it's important that the author included this and it is a thing that a lot of people still ignore. Everyone goes around judging people without knowing what they actually like, I sometimes do it without even noticing I'm doing it. It's just part of being human. However, it's helpful to remember the phrase and try and put it to use. The book points out the differences between the pair, Charm can never find anything in her messy room meanwhile Dirty Bird knows where everything is because he's well-organised. It then finishes off with something the pair share: their love for reading and how they lend their books to each other. After that it continues to talk about how important friends are and how it doesn't matter if you and your friend are different because no one is the same as everyone else. Overall, I really enjoyed the story and thought it mentioned important subjects but explained them in a way that young children (the target audience of this book) will understand and remember. The illustrations also added a lot to the story. They were fun and also humorous - overall just brilliant. Rate - 4/5 Be Careful (Zoom Boom #3) by Joel Brown Title - Be Careful (Zoom Boom #3) Author - Joel Brown Pages - 28 Pages Synopsis - Zoom Boom the Scarecrow is to the rescue again, but this time he is rescuing Carrie Careless. Carrie Careless never watches where she is going. She is almost hit by a car when she crosses the street because she was not paying attention to the oncoming traffic. She almost fell down the stairs at school because she did not watch her step or hold onto the handrail. Both times Zoom Boom had to rescue her. He always tells her to be careful and pay attention to the safety signs. Zoo Boom wants everyone to be careful and follow all the safety signs in school, around their community, and in their homes.Be Careful is the third book in the Zoom Boom book series. The concept of the book is to make children aware of safety signs and to obey them. Zoom Boom, the scarecrow assist them in making sure they do. This is the third book in the Zoom Boom picture book series and this one features Carrie Careless, who just like her name says is very careless, and Zoom Boom, who is always saving Carrie Careless from trouble. Carrie Careless is always getting into trouble because of how careless she is. She doesn't look before crossing the road, she doesn't read warning signs etc and therefore Zoom Boom has to come to the rescue. The book shows the importance of how you should always pay attention when crossing the road, walking up and down the stairs etc because Zoom Boom can't come to save you if you don't. The author made it so that the children reading it will remember the messages and know/understand the importance of them. The book showed what could happen if you didn't pay attention in certain situations by using Carrie as an example. However, luckily for her Zoom Boom was always there to save her. Despite the great illustrations, this book was my least favourite out of the three therefore I did end up giving it a slightly lower rating. However, I would still recommend this book and the others as they are a lot of fun. Rate - 3/5 Joel Brown Q&A -
