Birthday Book Haul! My birthday was on October 16th and I did get quite a lot of books without meaning to. I know this post is really late, but I did one of these last year I think and it got quite a lot of views and some of you did like it, so I thought I'd do it again this year. I did write this post back in October, but I just forgot to post it, so that's why it's being posted now. I just want to say I'm not trying to brag and I am really grateful for all of the things I received. I'm basically going to try and keep this post short when I can, but I will still include each books' synopsis, so you can have a look at them if you want to. Anyway, let's get into my 'Birthday Book Haul'! I went birthday shopping with my mum and before we went home, I wanted to have a look at the big Asda near where we were, so we did. A lot of you might know from my previous book hauls, but whenever I go there, I can guarantee I'll walk out with at least two books. They have so many YA books there for a supermarket and they always have offers on the majority of them like 2 for £7 etc, so it's pretty hard not to get a couple of books. Anyway, all but one of the books below are from there and so I'll start with the one book that I didn't get at Asda. The one book I didn't get from Asda was Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: Illustrated Edition by J.K. Rowling and Illustrated by Jim Kay. I had talked nonestop about this book for weeks before my birthday and turns out my mum had ordered it for me. I am so happy to have this as I do also have the illustrated version of the first book as well and they are both so gorgeous and look so good together. I can't wait for the future ones! Synopsis: The Dursleys were so mean and hideous that summer that all Harry Potter wanted was to get back to the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. But just as he's packing his bags, Harry receives a warning from a strange, impish creature named Dobby who says that if Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts, disaster will strike. And strike it does. For in Harry's second year at Hogwarts, fresh torments and horrors arise, including an outrageously stuck-up new professor, Gilderoy Lockhart, a spirit named Moaning Myrtle who haunts the girls' bathroom, and the unwanted attentions of Ron Weasley's younger sister, Ginny. But each of these seem minor annoyances when the real trouble begins, and someone, or something, starts turning Hogwarts students to stone. Could it be Draco Malfoy, a more poisonous rival than ever? Could it possibly be Hagrid, whose mysterious past is finally told? Or could it be the one everyone at Hogwarts most suspects: Harry Potter himself? GR -https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15881.Harry_Potter_and_the_Chamber_of_Secrets?ac=1&from_search=true BD - http://www.bookdepository.com/Harry-Potter-and-the-Chamber-of-Secrets/9781408845653 The rest of the books are from Asda: Super Awkward by Beth Garrod I have already read this and may have a review for it coming soon! Synopsis: I, Bella Fisher, am absolutely WINNING at FAILING at life. 1. I once got my tongue stuck to a box of Calippos in a supermarket. 2. I accidentally called my geography teacher Mum. Twice. He wasn't impressed. 3. I'm a geek. And not in a geek-chic kind of way, but in a secretly-caring-about-failing-maths-and-science way. 4. I always fail maths and science. So it figures that when I meet the FITTEST BOY IN THE WORLD, Zac, I'm doing solo star jumps. While dressed as a cereal box. (NOTE TO SELF, fancy dress = HE-WILL-NEVER-EVER-FANCY-ME dress.) Now I've got to somehow persuade Zac to come to prom with me while avoiding my evil ex and dealing with a secret so mega-awks I want to Ctrl-Z my brain... What could go wrong? Oh yeah, that's right. Absolutely everything. GR - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29554546-super-awkward?ac=1&from_search=true BD - http://www.bookdepository.com/Super-Awkward/9781407166407 Our Chemical Hearts by Krystal Sutherland Synopsis: John Green meets Rainbow Rowell in this irresistible story of first love, broken hearts, and the golden seams that put them back together again. Henry Page has never been in love. He fancies himself a hopeless romantic, but the slo-mo, heart palpitating, can't-eat-can't-sleep kind of love that he's been hoping for just hasn't been in the cards for him—at least not yet. Instead, he's been happy to focus on his grades, on getting into a semi-decent college and finally becoming editor of his school newspaper. Then Grace Town walks into his first period class on the third Tuesday of senior year and he knows everything's about to change. Grace isn't who Henry pictured as his dream girl—she walks with a cane, wears oversized boys' clothes, and rarely seems to shower. But when Grace and Henry are both chosen to edit the school paper, he quickly finds himself falling for her. It's obvious there's something broken about Grace, but it seems to make her even more beautiful to Henry, and he wants nothing more than to help her put the pieces back together again. And yet, this isn't your average story of boy meets girl. Krystal Sutherland's brilliant debut is equal parts wit and heartbreak, a potent reminder of the bittersweet bliss that is first love. The Potion Diaries: The Royal Tour (Potion #2) by Amy Alward I have also read this one and am thinking of including it in a mini-reviews post or if not it'll be in my November wrap-up. Synopsis: Since winning the Hunt and saving her new BFF, Princess Evelyn, Sam Kemi has been royally busy.. What with TV interviews, working in her family’s potion store and preparing to join Evelyn on her world tour, Sam STILL hasn’t had time for a real date with Zain, her new-boyfriend-slash-former-rival. And that’s not happening anytime soon. Someone has tampered with Sam’s grandad’s mind and she is the only one who can unlock his memories. Memories that contain the key to the most powerful potion in the world and one which people would kill for . . . So Sam must swap dresses, princes and palaces for dragons, centaurs and caves in her quest to save her grandad (and everyone else). Just your standard episode in the life of a potion-making teenager, then. February Book Haul! This months book haul is quite larger than my previous ones therefore to save time I'm going to change the way I format my book hauls. When I do my bookhauls I always insert the picture of a book in and then talk a bit about what I THINK it's about and I normally just write a load of rubbish. So what I'm going to do instead is copy in the synopsis' in for each book so you can actually KNOW what each book is about. Therefore, I won't really be talking much about each one as it's not necessary. I will still be talking a bit here and there but it will be quite different. I'm sort of just doing this as a tester, so if you guys don't like it then comment on this blog post and I can always change it back to my normal setup, if I get no comments I will just carry on doing this method so please let me know below. Anyway, this month I have a total of 15 (I think?) book to haul so let's get into it! Library Books This month I decided to go to the library and order a book in and then when I went to return it I may have took another two books out. (Oops!) Though I didn't pay for these I thought I may as well throw them in here as well so here they are. Naomi&Ely's No Kiss List by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan Naomi and Ely are best friends. Naomi loves and is in love with Ely, and Ely loves Naomi, but prefers to be in love with boys. So they create their "No Kiss List" of people neither of them is allowed to kiss. And this works fine…until Bruce. Bruce is Naomi's boyfriend, so there's no reason to put him on the List. But when Ely kisses Bruce, the result is a rift of universal proportions. Can these best friends come back together again? Or will this be the end of Naomi and Ely: the institution? Told in alternating voices using an array of emoticons and symbols by co-authors Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, co-author of WILL GRAYSON, WILL GRAYSON with John Green (THE FAULT IN OUR STARS), NAOMI AND ELY’S NO KISS LIST is the ultimate offbeat love—and in love—story. I have actually finished reading this and overall it was okay. I do talk about it more in my February Wrap-Up which I'll link below. Also, if you want a review then comment down below and I'll do one. Be prepared that it will be quite ranty. Charity Shop Finds M is For Magic by Neil Gaiman - £1 - Charity Shop I went to this big charity shop, which is about 15 minutes away from where I live and it was the first time I had been there so I was excited to see how the book section was. There was a LOT of books, but very few that interested me and that were in the conditions I tend to buy them in. This was one of the few book that actually interested me and that was because it was Neil Gaiman. I've never read a Neil Gaiman book, but I've always been intrigued by his work, so when I saw this in basically perfect condition for only a pound, I just couldn't not buy it. All I know about this is that it's a collection of short stories, I've read one of the stories already and it was actually quite good. Synopsis - A sinister jack-in-the-box haunts the lives of children who owned it, a stray cat does nightly battle to protect his adopted family, and a boy raised in a graveyard confronts the much more troubled world of the living in this wonderful book of short stories by master storyteller Neil Gaiman. These eleven stories range from the scary to the whimsical, the fantastical to the humorous - each a different journey in which the reader encounters the rich and wonderful imagination of a writer who knows how to thrill and satisfy his audience. My Sister Lives On The Mantelpiece by Annabel Pitcher - £1 - Charity Shop This was the only other book that I purchased from the charity shop. I have always wanted to read Annabel Pitcher's work (I've read a sampler of Silence Is Goldfish) and most of all I want to read Ketchup Clouds, but I saw this one there and just decided to pick it up. Synopsis - Ten-year-old Jamie hasn't cried since it happened. He knows he should have - Jasmine cried, Mum cried, Dad still cries. Roger didn't, but then he is just a cat and didn't know Rose that well, really. Everyone kept saying it would get better with time, but that's just one of those lies that grown-ups tell in awkward situations. Five years on, it's worse than ever: Dad drinks, Mum's gone and Jamie's left with questions that he must answer for himself. This is his story, an unflinchingly real yet heart-warming account of a young boy's struggle to make sense of the loss that tore his family apart. The Works Sale Only Ever Yours by Louise O'Neill - £1 - The Works The other day I was browsing through the books in the sale at The Works when I saw this! Just like with the previous authors, I've always wanted to read Louise O'Neill after hearing nothing other that good things about Asking For It. I did sort of want t get this in the other cover with the Barbie doll head on, but there was only this one so I decided I may as well get it in this cover. The on ething that I do absolutely love about this book is the spine. It's bright pink and the font is bold - it really stands out on my shelf and it looks simple but so pretty. Synopsis - In a world in which baby girls are no longer born naturally, women are bred in schools, trained in the arts of pleasing men until they are ready for the outside world. At graduation, the most highly rated girls become “companions”, permitted to live with their husbands and breed sons until they are no longer useful. For the girls left behind, the future – as a concubine or a teacher – is grim. Best friends Freida and Isabel are sure they’ll be chosen as companions – they are among the most highly rated girls in their year. But as the intensity of final year takes hold, Isabel does the unthinkable and starts to put on weight. .. And then, into this sealed female environment, the boys arrive, eager to choose a bride. Freida must fight for her future – even if it means betraying the only friend, the only love, she has ever known. . . The last book(s) I bought was a box set.. The Shiver trilogy by Maggie Stiefvater - £3.50! - The Works When I went into The Works before Christmas I saw this box set, but it was £10. I really wanted it, but didn't really want to spend that amount of money on it as I've heard you either love it or hate it. Anyway, I go in after Christmas and it's priced at £3.50, so as you can tell I squealed and threw my money at the women at the till. I think this is actually a series now though, isn't it or there's another book in the same world or something? Let me know down below! The books in the box set are - - Shiver (#1) by Maggie Stiefvater - Linger (#2) by Maggie Stiefvater - Forever (#3) by Maggie Siefvater Synopsis - When a local boy is killed by wolves, Grace's small town becomes a place of fear and suspicion. But Grace can't help being fascinated by the pack, and by one yellow-eyed wolf in particular. There's something about him - something almost human. Then she meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away... A chilling love story that will have you hooked from the very first page. I know this is sort of late, but I was busy and I was attempting to fit in as much reading as possible in the free time I do have over Christmas break. I hope you guys all had a great Christmas (if you celebrate it)! Let me know what you got for Christmas down below! Anyway, I received quite a few (okay, a lot!) of books for Christmas and I'm really excited to share them with you as well as read them. I just want to say that I'm not bragging in any way, shape or form. I'm only doing this as a lot of other book bloggers have done it and I know that quite a few of you guys wanted to know what I got. I'm extremely grateful for what I got and couldn't be happier! Let's get into the haul! A LITTLE STORY To start off with I do have a bit of a story to go along with some of these books. Anyway, my Mum and I decided to go book shopping, so I could pick out a few books for her to purchase for me for Christmas. We went to one of my favourite book stores, which is around a 20 minute drive from my house, as it is really cheap and I often find some really great deals there. They don't have new releases often, but I still find some great books for even greater prices. We were having a look around after choosing some books for my Mum and I saw there was like a spinny thing (great description there Beth!) with YA books for a £1 each! I may have freaked out a tiny bit and ran to the spinny thing. Some of the books had a bit of shelf wear (all the books are new, just these were a bit scuffed up), but there was still some really great ones. Anyway, me and my Mum just looked through a bunch of books and stuffed quite a few into the basket/trolley thing as they were only £1 each! Here are the ones I got : I hadn't really heard a lot about any of these, but they just sounded interesting, so I picked them up anyway. Dream Machine by Will Davis This one was more of a sort of joke - my Mum thought it sounded funny so she just put it in the basket, without me really knowing. "Think Popstars, throw in a dash of X Factor and add a pinch of Big Brother." - Scotsman This is what my Mum read and thought it just sounded really funny and cheesy. It was only a pound so if I don't end up liking it, it won't really matter and I can just donate it to my charity shop or something if it comes to it. I hadn't heard of it before, so when I got home I searched it up on Goodreads and it's got awful reviews. I might end up liking it though, I wont know till I try it! I will write a review for this when I do read it. *If you have read this book or any of the ones below, let me know your thoughts!* Skinny B, Skaz and Me by John Singleton I had a quick read of the synopsis of this one and it did sound like something I would enjoy, so I decided to pick it up and it was only a pound. Also, I quite like this cover. The synopsis is sort of vague so it's hard for me to sum it up, but I think it's something to do with this neighbourhood and there is something bad happening or something like that. It sounded interesting so yeah. As I'm really bad at explaining what it's about, I will pasted the synopsis below. Skinny B: Mum's little angel, Dad's little princess, my little sister. Say no more. Skaz? A joker, a kind of mate till he starts giving my life a right good kicking. And me - I'm Lee, face first in trouble right from the moment I walk smack into Hoodz 5. Nothing's safe any more. It's a nightmare. Fifty Fifty by S.L. Powell This was another £1 purchase! The main thing that drew me to this was the synopsis - it sounds really different to things I've read in the past and it does sound like a good read. From what I gather, this book is about a kid called Gil, who's dad is a scientist and they are currently on a collision course. Where they meet Jude, who is an animal rights activist. Obviously Gil's father and Jude aren't going to get on, at all. Stuff kicks loose and chaos erupts and Gil must find a way to overcome a dilemma 'that goes right to the heart of his own identity.' With this final £1 book, I did actually know a bit about it, but never really knew what it was properly about. In Darkness by Nick Lake Like I said, I had heard about this one, but never knew what it was about. When I recognised the title and saw the price, I immediately picked it up to find out more about the story. It sounded like something that I would really enjoy reading and I didn't even think about purchasing it, I had to! Also, I am thinking about reading this quite soon, maybe January, I haven't really decided, but you may see this in a January TBR. Anyway, this book takes place just after the Haitian earthquake in 2010 and features a young boy, who is trapped beneath the rubble of an old hospital. He is hungry, thirsty and alone. I think he is/has been part of a gang and he has witnessed a lot of violence. He desires to be able to find his sister, that he lost 5 years ago. There is also another guy called Toussaint L'Ouverture from the past that somehow links to the young boy and that adds to the story. That may have sounded quite confusing, so I will leave a link at the end to the Goodreads page so you can get a full synopsis. A MUCH SHORTER STORY I promise this wont be as long as that first bit! Most of you will probably know that I am currently reading The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare (reviews will be coming soon!) for the first time and have been trying to get the books for as cheap as possible. I had the first book, the third and the fourth. Meaning that I needed the second, the fifth and the sixth to have a complete set. Well, in the same bookshop they had those three remaining books (in the same paperback copies) for £2.99 each, so my Mum said that for Christmasd she would also get those three remaining books for me (I know, she's awesome). Here they are : City of Ashes (Book #2) by Cassandra Clare Like I said, this was one of three books I needed to complete my collection of TMI series. I'm not going to say much about this as it is the second book in the series and spoilers. Basically everyone apart from me has read this series, but if you don't know what it's about I will give a quick summary. Clary is a normal teenage girl, living with her mother. One night she's at a club with her best friend, Simon, when she sees 4 mysterious figures disappearing into a store cupboard. Noone else apart from her seems to be able to see them, so she decides to investigate. One of them turns out to be a vampire and the other three are called Shadowhunters. Clary is confused and leaves it at that. The next day she sees one of the Shadowhunters again and within that same day, her mother disappears, she gets attacked by a demon and she discovers a second world that was hidden from her as a child. That was the summary and I do really recommend this action-packed series if you haven't already read it. I've already read this book and all I'm going to say is 5/5. City of Lost Souls (Book #5) by Cassandra Clare Can't really say much about this as it's the fifth book in TMI series and I'm really looking forward to reading more from this world. City of Heavenly Fire (Book #6) by Cassandra Clare This is the last book in TMI series, so now I have all the books and I may marathon them. I haven't decided yet, but I don't want this series to end, I need more! Back in November (I think) I was browsing through Waterstones' special signed editions and covers for Christmas and I saw The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness (SIGNED) and in the UK cover. I told my Mum that I really wanted this for Christmas as I really wanted to read this book and they had signed copies. I then went on to Book Depository and they also had TROUJLH signed but in the American cover (which I prefer) for a cheaper price. My mum then ordered the Book Depository copy for me instead.THEY STILL HAVE THE SIGNED EDITION - I WILL LEAVE A LINK AT THE END! When I opened the box on Christmas morning, it also turned out to be a First Edition copy as well and the cover is so pretty! I love it and cant wait to delve into the story soon. I just realised that I forgot to include the Illustrated Edition of Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling! I will just slot it in here. Anyway, my brothers surprised me by buying me this for Christmas and it's so DAMN BEAUTIFUL. I cant wait to read Harry Potter! I haven't got a picture to put it in this post, but I will probably do a separate post to show the beauty of this book. The final book I got for Christmas was The Novice by Taran Matharu (SIGNED)! Me and my Mum were in Waterstones because I wanted to pick up All Wrapped Up by Holly Smale and I was looking through the shelves to see what else they had and there was a book lying the wrong way ontop of the shelf of books. I picked it up and it was a signed copy of The Novice and so I got it! Hehe. Anyway, that was all the books I got for Christmas and I couldn't be happier with the ones I got and I can't wait to read them all. I hope you all had a good Christmas and let me know what you got for Christmas down below or whether you've read any of the books above and what you thought about them. BYE! BUY THE BOOKS
